Mountain Bike Team

Coaches: Mr. Rothenburg, Mr. Simms, Mr. Ellis, Mrs. Cudmore
If you love to ride on two wheels (of the pedaling kind), enjoy the outdoors, want to stay fit, have fun, and be environmentally green, then this is the team for you. In the fall and spring, we meet after school ready to ride from the school (days TBD). We explore local off-road trails around Barrie and Midhurst, and occasionally drive to Horseshoe or Hardwood Hills to ride, while learning tips and tricks on bike handling and racing. If you enjoy racing competitively, the Simcoe County MTB Race series in the spring is a great opportunity for riders to race at different locations in Simcoe County. No experience is necessary to join this team. Mountain bikes are the preferred bike style for riding, and bike helmets are mandatory. It is recommended you bring water bottles, food, and bike tools.

Nordic Ski Team

Barrie North will be running a Nordic ski team this winter.  Whether your son or daughter wants to be ready for the 2018 Olympic selections or they want to be fit for life, they need to start now! As Canadians we need to find something to help us enjoy the 5 months of winter that we get in Simcoe County!  Mme Scully is looking for students with or without experience to sign up in Room 229.  We will start our season with dry land training very soon (stay tuned to announcements!) and move to Horseshoe Valley Nordic Centre when the snow arrives.  No experience is necessary !! As always, Grade 9 are encouraged to participate.

When are tryouts?
There are no set tryouts since the Nordic Ski Team accepts everybody, including beginners and up to OFSAA level competitors. Students can start attending practices as soon as cross country running is over, sometime in October or November. The season begins with dry land training in preparation for the snow. Coaches highly suggest that the skiers join cross country running to stay in shape for their season.

What is so great about Nordic skiing?
There are not many teams who get to enjoy winter to its fullest. We can spend the whole day at a meet. We often see wildlife as we do our training. Some of the animals we've seen are: deer, porcupines and owls. It's a lot of fun, a challenge, and it keeps us in shape.

How do I get involved?
Contact Mme. Scully by email at or contact the school by phone for more information.

Will I need my own equipment?
Total team fees are approximately $100.00. This includes athletic fees, equipment, and an after school ski pass to Horseshoe Ski Resort.

Students start with dry land training in preparation for the snow.  Once snow arrives the team goes to Horseshoe Valley where they practice 3 times a week depending on the race schedule. On the night of practice, practice runs until 4:30 pm.

During the season we have 6 races (all day) and then GB's in late February.  If skiers finish in the top 10-15 for their age group (Jr/Sr Boys/Girls) they may get to go to OFSAA.  Next year's OFSAA will be in Midland.

Who runs it?
Mme. Scully

Alpine Skiing

Coaches:  J. Wiggins, M. Berdan
Alpine skiing is a competitive race team that practices at Snow Valley.  The usual team cost is approximately $150, not including lift tickets.  It runs from December to February, and usually involves races at local resorts such as Horseshoe Valley, Mount St. Louis/Moonstone, Craigleith Ski Club, Osler Bluffs Ski Club, and Blue Mountain. Personal equipment is required.  All skiers must wear a helmet with protective coverings for their ears as well. New racers are welcome, as there are various levels to compete at with the team, but basic alpine skiing ability is a must.

Season: Winter (December to February)

Girls Slo-Pitch

Coaches: S. Fraser, D. Turnbull, G. Krausar, D. Futa (community coach)
Practices begin indoor after March break. Season starts with Pink Ribbon Tournament in early May, league play through May with final tournament in early June. Players should bring their own glove.
Season: Spring (April to June)

 Ultimate Frisbee

Advisors: M. Berdan
Ultimate Frisbee is a co-ed varsity sport played on turf both indoors and outdoors.

Season: September to June

Coach:  Mrs. Rowe

Season:  Practices/try outs start in early November and try outs will be for one month (names of those athletes making the team will be posted on the wrestling bulletin board outside room 102).  Coach Rowe is looking for athletes who will be committed to attending practices, are coachable (listen and follow through on instructions) and are both physically and mentally tough.  There will be 3 practices a week at Barrie North and athletes are also encouraged to attend K-Bay wrestling club practices on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  The season ends in early March after OFSSA.

Experience and Equipment:  No prior experience in wrestling is required to try out for this team.  At the beginning of every season the basics are taught and the senior wrestlers will help the beginners.  For try outs athletes only need shorts, t-shirt or sweat shirt, and clean indoor shoes.  If an athletes make the team, he/she will be expected to buy wrestling shoes and a singlet since both are mandatory for competition.
